Tirana – 7 February 2024 – Safer Internet Day (SID 2024 Albania) opened this morning its series of advocating and public awareness activities with major activities taking place across Albania. In the morning, schools across the country organized awareness and information classes for the risks children and adolescents face online and the tools and ways they can stay safe online.
Meanwhile, SID Albania organizers issued a public a statement for the public authorities, requesting major changes towards the establishment of a new institutional and legal architecture for better protection of children and young people on the Internet, while reform all the responsible authorities, which are seen as too weak to protect children from the risks they face online.
Part of the activities of the day was the running of the National Campaign for Safer Internet, which in Albania this year comes under the motto: 50 personalities for safer internet. Four Albanian Government Ministers, personalities from media and civil society, art and music etc. have already joined the campaign. The campaign will continue every day until the end of February.
On 7th February the main event for Safe Internet Day took place, with the organization of the 9th National Forum for Safer Internet in Albania. The Forum has become an annual national event organized by CRCA/ECPAT Albania, where institutions, civil society, experts, and representatives of the industry discuss on the issue of child internet safety and the measures that can be taken.
During the Forum, iSIGURT.al presented two major reports: the Annual National Report on Child Cybersecurity in Albania, as well as the Statistical Report “Hate Speech against Girls and Women in Albania” based on collected data between 2018-2023. While the Legal Office of CRCA/ECPAT Albania presented an overall legal review and shortcomings of the legislation regulating cyber safety for children and everyone.
At the opening of the Forum, two of the main Internet companies in Albania: Vodafone and Abissnet signed the National Pact for Protection of Children from Violence, which on 20 November 2023 was signed by four main ministries of the Albanian Government. The Pact places at its heart the need for more cooperation, exchange and coordination between institutions, organizations and industry, to protect children from violence.
In Albania, The Safer Internet Day is taking place since 2005, with a series of public events led by iSIGURT.al, CRCA/ECPAT Albania and ALO 116-111. Safer Internet Day aims to create a safer and better Internet, where we are all empowered to use technology responsively, respectfully, critically and creatively. The campaign aims to reach out to children and young people, parents and carers, teachers, educators and social workers, the internet and communications industry, decision makers and politicians, to encourage everyone to play their part in creating the best online environment for everyone. Celebrating the positive power of the Internet, the safer internet day slogan “Together for a better Internet” encourages everyone to join the movement, participate and make the most of the internet’s potential to bring people together.
To facilitate a smooth running of the campaign in Albania, all the awareness materials were placed on the website and made available to everyone, such as: info-sheets for ISIGURT.al services, Teacher’s Material: How to organize an online safety information session, campaign posters etc., in the link: https://www.isigurt.al/fushata-kombetare-per-internet-te-sigurt-ne-shqiperi-2024
