Tirana, 4 July 2025 – CRCA-ECPAT Albania launches the implementation of the newest project “Empowering Women in the Construction Sector (WEC)“, a transformative project aimed at the professional empowerment of women in the construction sector in the Western Balkans and the European Union, through innovative vocational education and training programs. The project is led by Future Cast in Ireland and implemented in partnership with some of the leading organisations from the Western Balkans and the EU. The project is co-funded by the European Union in the framework of the ERASMUS+ program.

The gender gap in the construction sector in Albania reflects European trends, but being even more pronounced. National data confirm that women and girls are very underemployed and preferred in the construction sector. INSTAT data show that over the last decade, less than 5% of the construction workforce has been women and girls, with the majority of employees being in support roles (p.sh. administration, accounting) and not in field work. Moreover, the pursuit of vocational education leading to employment in construction remains male-dominated. In 2021, fewer than 600 girls were enrolled in construction-related vocational schools, compared to over 4,000 male peers.

The WEC aims to increase the inclusion of girls and women in a traditionally male-dominated sector, promoting gender equality and sustainable labour market development in the region. Through quality training, professional internships and employment mediation, the project will equip girls and women with concrete skills in construction, technology and management, paving the way for equal inclusion and sustainable careers in this industry.

The key elements of the project are:

– Conducting research in each participating country about labour shortages and gender imbalances in the construction industry;

– Development of the online educational platform ËEC;

– Preparation of 4 curricular modules for vocational education, tailored to the needs of girls and women in the construction industry, including the development of 4 online courses.

– Organizing an international training for representatives of partner organizations;

– Conducting information sessions and practical seminars for teachers and instructors of vocational schools and centers.

– Preparation of animated video guides for teachers and instructors of vocational schools and centers.

CRCA/ECPAT Albania will contribute to this project by bringing its expertise on issues of gender equality, curriculum preparation, protection and promotion of the rights of girls and women for their economic and social empowerment.
