Tirana, 30 March 2020 – Although Albania has entered a total quarantine for the last two weeks, implementing strict measures for protection against the COVID-19 virus, civil society organizations continue to work in helping families in need.
There are about 400,000 people living in extreme situations in Albania who are experiencing food shortages, hunger, lack of personal hygiene, or even untreated illnesses due to lack of medicines etc.
Since the early days of the quarantine, CRCA/ECPAT Albania  issued a public call using the two hashtags #Albaniadonates and #someoneneedsyou to raise awareness of our communities throughout Albania to help families who cannot afford daily meals that have older people or even people with disabilities and unable to find the right treatment. Many volunteers responded to this call, but there were also many families seeking social support through food or telephone.
In this context, CRCA has so far identified and supported 35 families across Albania. Thanks to our campaign, citizens from all over the country have written to us or called for help, as they are living in extreme poverty. Through valuable cooperation with all municipalities, it has been possible to provide all the families in need with food and personal hygiene items.0
However, such assistance only solves temporarily the day-to-day problems that many poor families experience in Albania during the situation of mass isolation.
According to the World Bank, at least 14.3% of the population in Albania lives in extreme poverty. About 100,000 children every day are at risk of starvation and poverty. Now because of the lockdown they are forced to be isolated without access to daily food.
Given this very difficult reality, especially for children, CRCA/ECPAT Albania continues to reiterate its call to the Government made several weeks ago, which seems have turned a blind eye into vulnerable families.
